Victorian Futurity Schemes

A futurity is a program of races for which eligibility fees must be paid for a horse to be entitle to run in races restricted to that program. There are three futurity schemes that operate in Victoria - you can read more about these specific programs and futurities generally on the HRV Futurities website, or by clicking through below.

Vicbred - Victoria’s Breeding-Based Futurity Scheme

Victoria is home to the richest futurity scheme in Australia - Vicbred. Designed to encourage breeders to domicile their mares in Victoria and support local studs, Vicbred consists of three tiers - Vicbred Basic, Vicbred Platinum and Vicbred Pure. With millions in stakes and bonuses set aside exclusively for Vicbred horses each season, it absolutely pays to be Vicbred. Let’s learn a little more about what benefits you can reward yourself with if you choose to breed Vicbred:

Vicbred Pure carries the best reward for breeders including eligibility for all basic Vicbred bonuses and race programming including the rich Super Series plus the maximum $12,000 First Win Bonus when the horse wins its first race as a 2YO, 3YO or 4YO. For Vicbred Platinum horses, a $9,000 First Win Bonus will apply as well as exclusive access to the Vicbred Platinum Home Grown and Sprint Championship series, as well as the Super Series and general Vicbred programmed races and bonuses.

Only the applicable tier of First Win Bonus will apply to the horse’s first Victorian win (i.e. Vicbred Pure will get ONLY the applicable $12,000 bonus not both the Vicbred Pure AND Vicbred bonus) and the 5YO+ amount is static across all tiers.

Breeding for Those Rich Benefits

The primary benefits of Vicbred apply if a foal is bred in South Australia or Tasmania, OR any other state AND by a stallion registered in Victoria but the best value is to be had by making sure your mare is inseminated, foaled down and notified in Victoria.

This simple table will help you design a breeding plan for your mare that will result in the highest level of benefit from the Vicbred scheme:

But is it easy to find sires who provide the best Vicbred value? It is now!

HBV member studs in Victoria offer a world-beating range of stallions who will throw Vicbred-eligible progeny - we’ll have a list of them for 2023 up soon…

IMPORTANT NOTE: This table will ONLY include Vicbred-eligible sires registered in Victoria AND standing at Victorian studs which are current HBV members. If you're a Victorian stud and would like your Victorian-registered stallions added to this list, join HBV today.

There are other sires which are able to produce foals which may be eligible for various levels of Vicbred (which are either not registered locally or are not offered by a member stud). For a full listing of stallions registered with HRA for 2023 based by state, visit HRA’s Stud Index.

ONLY mares bred in Victoria can produce progeny eligible for Pure or Platinum and all the attached additional benefits. Want to move your mare to Victoria to take full advantage of Vicbred Pure or Platinum? Contact one of our Victorian member studs or one of the Victorian breeding farms (particularly members Rhiannon Park or Benstud) for more information on basing your mare in Victoria: the best state to breed, race and own.

Again, if you're a Victorian agistment facility with insemination and/or agistment facilities and would like your link added to this list, join HBV today.
