From the President's Desk...

Members will be well aware that HRA have ignored breeders and imposed the stallion levy as part of the Eureka concept. No details have been forthcoming and we wait patiently for the amendments to the studbook to be provided by HRA.Their approach is lacking transparency as the breeding season approaches and the breeding industry cannot make decisions due to the lack of information. HRA need to move things along with haste.

HRA and HBV share a common goal of supporting locally bred sires. Our advocacy for VicBred Pure is evidence of our approach, which provides a ‘carrot’ to breeders in the form of an increased First Win Bonus. HRA prefer the ‘stick’ approach by penalising breeders who choose shuttle and frozen semen stallions.

In our view their politics are dangerously misguided and based on the hope that their concept will drive new buyers to buy Australian bred horses.

If their approach results in a reduction in the best stallions in the world coming to Australia they will be risking the genetic quality of our herd which puts at risk the ability to get as many horses bred as possible to the racetrack.

HBV prefers to have the best stallions in the world along with the best locally bred sires available to breeders in Australia. HRA’s approach puts that at risk.
